Theodore "Ted" Hillyer

October 31, 1927 - September 15, 2018

Theodore Francis Hillyer, known to friends as “Ted” passed away September 15, 2018 at the age of 90.  Ted will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 35 years, Mary and his children:  Randy (Lynn), Susan Schultz, Terry (Vicki), Larry (Vikky), Sheri McOmber, 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.  Ted will also be fondly remembered by his siblings, Edwin J., Ileane Stenger, Shirley DeLapp, Bonnie Anastasakes, Betty Lou Green and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin A. and Carrie L. (nee Stevens) Hillyer, sisters Evelyn Everett, Iris Royston and brother Vernie.

Ted was born October 31, 1927 in Benkelman, Nebraska.  Ted and his family moved to the Salem area when he was a young boy.  Growing up, Ted helped his family by harvesting crops.  Ted joined the Air Force in 1946 and narrowly missed being shipped overseas.  Ted was a truck driver by profession, known for his skill of “pulling triples down the road.”

Ted was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing.  As Ted got older, he said the deer got faster and his grandchildren would tease him about his “drive by” hunting.  Besides his family and friends, two of his fondest memories were his fishing trip to Alaska and the cruise to Alaska he and his wife took.

Please join the family in celebrating Ted’s life on Tuesday, September 25th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1010 Columbia St., NE. Salem, Oregon.  Viewing will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the church. The Funeral Mass with Military Honors will begin at 11:00 am with a reception following.
