Ronald M. Smith
March 17, 1926 - October 5, 2018
Commander Ronald M. Smith, died peacefully on Friday Oct. 5th at Salem Hospital after saying goodbye to his family. Ron was born on March 17th, 1926 in Salem, Oregon to parents Bertie and Ellsworth Smith.
Ron grew up in Salem and graduated from Salem High School. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy in June of 1943 and began his 28 year Naval career as an aircraft carrier based fighter pilot and then later serving as an intelligence officer. Commander Smith was a veteran of three wars. WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He retired from the Navy in August 1971 to his hometown of Salem.
While retired Ron continued to pursue his love of traveling, fishing, and spending time with his ever growing family.
He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Carmen J. (Campbell) Smith in 2005 and his sister Barbara Thomas in 2014.
Ron is survived by sons Jeff Smith of McMinnville, Scott A. Smith of Salem, and by his step-sister Linda Goldstrand of Veneta. Ron has two grandchildren, Christopher K. Smith and Maile (Smith) Keliiheleua. He also has four great grandchildren, Mya Smith, Kaleo Smith, Ela Keliiheleua, and Kaipo Keliiheleua.
At Ron's request, no memorial service will be offered. Instead, monetary contributions may be made to two of Ron's favorite charities, The American Red Cross https://www.redcross.org/, and Salem's Riverfront Carousel http://salemcarousel.wixsite.com/salemcarousel .
