Rita N Hopkins
October 3, 1919 - March 21, 2021
Rita N Hopkins passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 21, 2021 in Salem, OR surrounded by her 2 daughters and her caregiver. She was 101 years young. She lived life to the fullest. She loved deeply, she laughed often and died the way she wanted - at home and in her own time.
Rita was born October 3, 1919 in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia to Landsborough North and Frances Emily Thomson North. She was a school teacher in Australia prior to meeting Franklin P Hopkins during WWII. They married on May 27, 1944 in Brisbane, Australia. Rita immigrated to the United States and arrived via troop transport along with many other war brides. She became a US citizen on June 16, 1952.
She loved to travel and made several trips back to Australia and to other parts of the world. She loved to garden and spent a lot of time outside tending to her roses and other plants. She lived in the same home for over 60 years and her garden shows her hard work and dedication. It was always her pride and joy. She loved animals and adopted many stray cats that showed up over the years She would never let an animal go hungry and opened her home to those that showed up. She was an avid china painter. Her work is lovely and many spoke of her talents.
She is preceded in death by her brother, John North and her half sister, Diane Matheson, and her husband of 57 years, Franklin. She is survived by her brother, Roger North, of Brisbane, and her daughters, Louise Hopkins and Gayle Hopkins-Welch, both of Salem.
Donations can be made to her favorite charities: Willamette Humane Society, Union Gospel Mission, Marion Polk Food Share, The Salvation Army or Turtle Ridge Wildlife rescue.
No Services are planned at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
