Randy Carruthers

March 31, 1947 - July 6, 2021

Randy CarruthersJohn Randolph Carruthers Jr. (Randy) entered in the presence of the Lord on July 6, 2021.  He was surrounded by friends and family as he took his last peaceful breath.
Randy was born on March 31, 1947 in Santa Monica, CA to John and Penny Carruthers, the 3rd out of four children.  He attended Montclair College Prep, and went on to joining the Air Force in the Vietnam war at age 19, where he was stationed in Japan for three years.  He served from 1966-1970.  In 1972, he accepted Jesus Christ as Lord of his life.  It was from this point on that he began living a life in ministry as he desired to serve the Lord with his whole heart.  Randy attended JC Light and Power House in Los Angeles after accepting Christ, and then went on to Biola University where he graduated in 1976.  He was a missionary with Life Ministries from 1976-1980.  In 1980, he met the love of his life, Janet, and they married in 1982 in Salem, Oregon. They lived in Dallas, Texas the first year of their marriage where he received Masters of Divinity from Center for Advanced Biblical Studies. They returned to Oregon in 1983, where he served as Associate Pastor at Salem Evangelical Church.  He received his Masters degree in TESOL from Portland State University, and in 1987, he and his family moved to Kanazawa, Japan with Tentmakers International, where he taught at Hokuriku Gakuin High School and Jr. College for seven years.  In 1994, the family moved back to the United States and they settled in Salem, Oregon, where Randy started the International Student Program at Salem Academy.  He directed the international program and taught at Salem Academy for the next 20 years.
Randy was preceded in death by his father, John Carruthers, and sister, Judy Dandos.  He is survived by his wife, Janet, and their five children, Amy Quijano, Krystle Carruthers, Tim Carruthers, Stephanie Carruthers, and Laura Carruthers. He adored his two granddaughters Athena and Penny.  Survivors also include his mother, Cornelia Carruthers, his sister, Debbie Allen, and brother David Carruthers, and many nieces and nephews.
Randy had an infectious smile and was full of life, encouraging and lifting up those around him.  We will miss him terribly, but are, at the same time, happy he is in fellowship with His Creator.
The Celebration of Life service for Randy will be on Thursday, July 15, 2021, 2:00 pm at Salem Alliance Church.  Following the celebration of life, there will be a graveside service at City View in Salem, Oregon where he will receive full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salem Alliance Church.
