Lorraine N. Ellis
July 19, 1925 - April 20, 2021
Lorraine N. Ellis was born July 19,1925 in Minneapolis, MN. She was the only child Of John C. and Clara Nelson. She died on April 20, 2021.
Lorraine moved with her family to Ketchikan, Alaska when she was two years old. She graduated at the age of 16 from Ketchikan High School as a salutatorian. She loved growing up in Ketchikan in the 1930's and 1940's. These memories stayed with her all her life. She enjoyed bike riding to the beach, picking blueberries and salmon berries, The Saturday Mickey Mouse Club, climbing Deer Mountain and High School proms.
She came to Salem in 1942 to attend Willamette University. Salem was just a small town then but she embraced it with a love that lasted the rest of her life.
She won a Statesman Journal essay contest in 1983 describing her experiences in Salem. Her prize was $100.00.
Lorraine joined ST. Mark Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, a long-time member of the choir, an advisor of Luther League and a member of the Fine Arts committee. She was also a member and became president of The Alaska Club of the Willamette Valley, The "Y" Service club, The Sons of Norway and Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
In 1952 she began her career with the State of Oregon. She worked for the Highway Division and ODOT. And for many years was with the Parks Division. She retired in 1987.
She was married to John Ellis who was also from Ketchikan, Alaska. He passed away at the age of 48 in 1972. From this union she leaves one daughter, Mary Lorraine Ellis Hughes.
Lorraine was fortunate to make trips to Alaska, the Caribbean, Norway, Eastern Europe, and a trip down the Mississippi River on the American Queen sternwheeler.
Pets were a big part of her life. One special dog was named pal but she really had a preference for cats among them were Bobby, Percival, Kit, Samantha and Amica. Her most recent cat Hazel is being cared for by her daughter.
Her mother and father preceded her in death. She leaves behind her daughter Mary Hughes (Dan), granddaughter Shelley Langston (Shawn), Grandson Bryan Johnson (Colleen), great grandchildren, Brittany Langston (John), Kelsey Noble (Declan) and Callie Johnson and new born great-great- granddaughter Aoife. She also leaves her brother-in-law Robert Ellis (JoAnn).
