Lois J. Pierce
October 28, 1935 - November 29, 2020
Lois Janet (Hutchinson) Pierce passed away on November 29, 2020 at her home in Keizer, Oregon. She was 85-years old. Born in Iowa on October 28, 1935, she grew up in Mason City, Iowa. After graduating from Mason City High School and attending secretarial school, Lois honorably served the US Navy on active duty from November 1953 to October 1956 as a cook, her last station being at Treasure Island, San Francisco, CA. She met and married Norman Lyle Pierce in 1956 in San Francisco, CA.
After honorable discharge the couple moved to Salem, Oregon and their family grew to include children Kathy, Alan, and Dean. In 1968 Lois graduated from the License Practical Nurse (LPN) program at Chemeketa Community College. In 1969 Lois joined the Nursing Services at Salem Hospital, mainly working at Salem Memorial Hospital unit. Divorced in 1979, Lois moved to Portland to work at the Oregon Health Sciences Center, nursing in the Oncology unit. Returning to Keizer, Lois retired as an LPN III at Salem Hospital in 1999 after 30-years of nursing service.
In retirement Lois was actively involved in the Keizer/Salem Area Seniors (K/SAS), serving as their President in 2006. She also volunteered in the gift shop, reception desk, kitchen, and cashiering for lunch and afternoon dances. Lois never met a cookbook that she didn’t like. Her lasagna recipe is the go-to family dinner choice along with her carrot cake. She enjoyed going on ocean cruises with extended family, the highlight being a Panama Canal trip. She made a memorable trip to England and Copenhagen with her son Alan. Most of all she enjoyed being around family, proudly watching all the activities the kids were involved in from ballet performances to college graduations.
She is survived by her children: son Dean Lindsay Pierce and his family: spouse Leslie (Smith) Pierce, and grandchildren Megan (Pierce) Tabor, Lindsay, Marshall, Aimee, and Logan Pierce; daughter Kathy (Pierce) Schnabel and her family: spouse Ron Schnabel and grandchildren Elizabeth and Madeline Schnabel; her sisters LaVonne (Hutchinson) Burney, Arizona, and Mary (Hutchinson) Reisig, Florida.
Pre-deceasing her are her son, Alan Lyle Pierce, parents Gertrude (Molsberry) and (Albert) Ross Hutchinson, brothers Don Hutchinson, and Clyde Hutchinson.
Contributions can be made to the Keizer/Salem Area Senior Center in her name. Visitation and viewing will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 pm Wednesday, December 2nd at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service. Mrs. Pierce will be laid to rest next to her son, Alan Pierce at Belcrest Memorial Park.
