Joan Marie Teigland

March 21, 1931 - April 1, 2020

Joan Marie Teigland passed away peacefully at home and in the presence of family on April 1, 2020. Joan, who was known as "Hundred" for most of her adult life, was a homemaker, peacemaker, funmaker, and sometime troublemaker who gained strength from and gave strength to her family and friends.

Hundred was born on her parents farm near Menahga, Minnesota on March 21, 1931. The second of three children, Hundred joked about her "middle child affliction "-even saying the doctor who came for her birth was more interested in the cow calving in the barn than in attending to her and her mother. Hundred's parents and siblings were central to her identity and the core influencers on her empathy for others. Growing up on a dairy farm during the Depression, and then moving with her family to Sumner, Washington so her father could work in the shipyards during World War II, gave Hundred an appreciation for hard work and simple pleasures.

Hundred graduated from Washington State University and worked as a dietician for many years. Her main avocation, however, was raising her children, grandchildren, and eventually great grandchildren. She and her second husband, David A. Teigland, moved to the Salem-Keizer area in 1981 and spent much of the coming years celebrating the growth and journeys of their extended family. Although she struggled with physical limitations for most of her life, Grandma Hundred never let that stand in the way of the no-strings-attached love she had for her kids.

Spending the last few years of her life at Gibson Creek Assisted Living gave Hundred the chance to share her positive outlook with other residents and the staff. She appreciated the community-aspect of the facility and the dedication and tireless work of the staff members she considered friends.

Hundred leaves her brother, James Shaver, daughter Terrie Teigland-March and son-in-law Wayne, her son John Divelbiss and daughter-in-law Amy, granddaughters Kiya, Sarah, and Zo, grandson Logan, and five great grandchildren.

The service for Joan Marie Teigland will be held on April 25 through the grace of Father Brandon Filbert of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. As a sign of remembrance for Hundred, please consider a donation to Willamette Valley Hospice 1015 3rd St NW, Salem 97304. Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
