Jeffery O. "Jeff" Jackson
April 13, 1948 - September 14, 2021
Jeffrey Oran Jackson was born April 13, 1948 to George Oran and Dorothy Odessa Jackson in Vancouver, Washington. He left us on September 14, 2021 after experiencing complications related to lung cancer surgery.
Jeffrey attended Beach Elementary School and Jefferson High School in Portland, Oregon. While in high school, he participated in student government, honor society, school plays, and was a cheerleader on the rally squad during the basketball season. He was also a talented musician who enjoyed piano and guitar. Jeff was a member of a band and played in numerous venues throughout the Northwest.
After graduating from high school in 1966, Jeff spent the following summer hitchhiking by himself throughout Mexico, Central and South America where he learned Spanish while visiting numerous countries there. Jeff later went on to college at Antioc University in Ohio. Required to spend one year studying abroad, Jeff went to England and attended Oxford University. Given his love of travel and adventure, he also visited countries throughout Europe and Northern Africa again by hitchhiking from country to country. He often found other students to travel with and frequently spent the night in the homes of people he had just met in order to sleep in a comfortable bed. Occasionally he would allow himself the luxury of staying in a hotel paying about $6.00 per night which he found was extremely expensive.
After college Jeff lived outside of Boston and worked in construction for a friend he had met while in Europe. Eventually he found his way back to Portland where he worked as a vice president for Blue Cross Health Insurance. He moved to Salem, Oregon to work for Capitol Health Care, then back to Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Jeff and his partner Jim Harlow, started their own business, Capitol Dental Care. Jeff retired after selling the business in 1998.
Jeff met Patricia at a Johnny Limbo concert in 1987, and three years later he proposed with a surprise engagement/40th birthday party. He gained an instant family and became step dad to Ryan and Ashlie. He was very proud and supportive of their life choices particularly with Ryan becoming a member of the US Marine Corps and Ashlie going to University of Southern California (where she met her husband Brett Woods) then attending Duke University for Business School. Ryan later also attended Business School at Willamette University. Jeffrey was especially proud of becoming a grandfather and was “Papa” to four amazing grandchildren; Devin, Zayn, Scarlett and Spencer. They brought great joy to him.
Jeff and Pat traveled a great deal and loved vacationing throughout the United States and on numerous cruises to Alaska, Europe and the Caribbean. Jeff especially enjoyed a cross country rail trip from Vancouver to Montreal. Jeff''s love of sport fishing for marlin and other big fish took him on adventures in Mexico, Cuba, Ecuador, and many other South American countries.
Jeff had many passions. He was a golfer, he loved to hunt with his Eastern Oregon buddies, he loved to cook, and he loved cats. PC (perfect cat) lived with Jeff for many years and after his passing, JAC (just another cat) came into his life and was his pride and joy. He even joined a Maine Coone internet site and constantly shared stories and pictures. During his last months, each night he would send Pat a picture of a Maine Coon via his iphone. Jeff loved Palm Springs and was very excited about building a vacation home there which was designed by his son in law Brett Woods. Jeff was able to visit in July and loved so many aspects of the design and construction process. He loved his Friday lunches at the Elks. He loved the USC marching band and used the fight song as his ringtone.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Patricia, his son Ryan, his daughter Ashlie, son in law Brett Woods, and four grandchildren; Devin and Zayn Brush and Scarlett and Spencer Woods.
