Jean Marie Ruef

Jean Marie Ruef passed away in her home from symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease on September 11, 2021. Jean was born July 14, 1931 in Aberdeen, South Dakota into a family with photography businesses. Her parents, Marinus and Alice Artz, started a photography studio in Huron, South Dakota and relocated the business to Salem, Oregon on Main Street in 1947 when Jean was a junior in high school. She then went on to graduate from Sacred Heart Academy.
Jean and Pete Ruef married November 8, 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic
Church in Mt. Angel, Oregon. Pete worked for the First National Bank of Oregon and the family moved throughout Oregon, including Salem, Coos Bay, Medford and Oregon City. Throughout her career, Jean worked as an elevator operator for Montgomery Wards i
n Salem, as a photo tinter for Ken Knackstedt studios in Medford, as a dental assistant in Oregon City and as a “Million Dollar Club” real estate agent in Gladstone. Jean returned to Salem when she retired 28 years ago. Jean was known throughout the family as an accomplished oil, acrylic and watercolor artist.
Jean will be missed by four children; James Peter Ruef of Lebanon, Oregon, Cynthia Louise (Ruef) McDonald of Portland, Oregon, Tamara Jean (Ruef) Gates of Depoe Bay,
Oregon and David Joseph Ruef of Fleming Island, Florida. Jean’s husband, Peter Arnold Ruef died in 1976 and eldest son, Steven Arnold
Ruef of Westlake Village, California died in 2012. She also has two sisters, Lois Marchildon of Hillsboro and Karen Morris of Woodburn. Jean is also survived by Henri and Ernest Dill and Max and Marlene Ruef, all in Mt. Angel. Jean has fifteen (15) grandchildren (one deceased) and 23 Great Grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 am Friday, September 24, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 721 Chemeketa St NE in Salem, preceded by a rosary at 9:30. The service will be live streamed. Please provide an email address to the Funeral Home to receive the live stream link. Viewing will be Thursday, September 23 from 2:30 to 3:30 in the South chapel at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service, 605 Commercial St SE in Salem, OR. Graveside service is at noon on Tuesday September 28 at Calvary Cemetery 1015 N Main St, Mt. Angel, OR. Flowers may be sent to Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service or donation may be sent in Jean’s remembrance to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salem, Blanchett Catholic School in Salem, or St. Jude Hospital for Children.
