James L Knieling

James “Jim” LeRoy Knieling passed away October 1, 2020, in Salem, Oregon at the age of 87. Jim was born the tenth child of German immigrant parents in Ellis, Kansas, on August 11, 1933. The family left for Oregon during the Dust Bowl, arriving in the Willamette Valley in 1936. Jim attended Marion Elementary and graduated from Cascade High School in 1951. Jim attended OCE and worked before enlisting in the US Air Force, where he became a communications specialist and served for four years in the Far East and Massachusetts. Returning to Oregon, Jim attended Oregon State University, keeping active in student government and Campus Club. He completed his college degree in Business at Oregon State University in 1959. Jim met Marlene in 1958 and they were married in September of 1959. In 1960, Jim began his work with State Farm Insurance Company in the regional office in Salem. Together, Jim and Marlene built a home of love for over 61 years, raising two cherished children, Shauna and John. Jim worked in a number of different leadership roles at State Farm and retired after 38 years of service. Jim enjoyed fishing, especially for steelhead, and was a true craftsman with woodworking, specializing in antique clocks and home remodeling. Jim was a devoted OSU Beaver fan. Their children, Shauna and husband Preston, John and wife Jessica, along with beloved grandchildren Tristan Samantha, Amelia, Hadleigh and Jaxon, will forever cherish the memory of their father and “Opa.” Jim will be remembered as a man of unparalleled integrity, honesty, sincerity, devotion and generosity.
