Marv Kessell

September 1, 1921 - November 21, 2018


Marvilla Wade Kessell, Marv was born September 1, 1921, in Chula Vista, California to Ross and Edna Kessell.  When he was one year old, his family moved back to De Smet, South Dakota, where they farmed until the dry years came.  His family moved to Sweet Home, Oregon, in 1932, where they farmed and had a chicken ranch. 
 
Marv graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1939.  He was drafted July 30 1942 as part of the first group of 20 year old’s drafted.  He was assigned to the 846th Engineer Aviation Battalion, which built and maintained air bases.  He worked 18 months in England on airfields around Cambridge, Ipswich and Colchester.  Landed on Omaha Beach July 13, 1944 and helped build the first fighter bomber base in France.
 
Marv was discharged November 15, 1945, and returned to Sweet Home.  He married Alice Anderson on June 7, 1946.  Worked various jobs before ending his career at Morse Brothers in Sweet Home, working as a rock crusher operator. 
 
After retiring he and Alice moved to Salem Oregon where he took up golf.  He was a regular at Auburn Golf Club until he was 93.  He was also an avid sports fan, especially if Oregon State was involved.
 
He is survived by five children, Sandra Elliott, Shirley Spendal, Ann Sharp, Wade Kessell, and Richard Kessell, all who live in the Salem area.  He has 10  grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. 
 
In the last 20 months of his life Marv required additional care and went to live at Meadow Creek Village Assisted Living. The family would like to say thank you to the staff for the wonderful care he received there - he was extremely blessed with care by special people. Thank you.
 
A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, December 11th at 2:30 p.m., at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Home, 605 Commercial  Street, SE, Salem,  Oregon.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Alzheimer’s  Association, P.O.  Box 96011, Washington D.C. 20090-6011.
