Luella Price

March 31, 1938 - October 27, 2018

Luella Price, age 80, died peacefully of Alzheimer’s and other age-related causes, on 10/27/18, at Farmington Square Senior Living Community, in Salem OR. She had been a resident at Farmington in recent years and was a longtime resident of Salem. Luella was interred in a private burial on 11/1/18 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland OR.
Luella was born on 3/31/38 in Freeport IL and grew up on her family farm in rural Elizabeth IL. She attended the Bethel School, a one-room country school, and was a member of the 1956 graduating class of Elizabeth High School. Luella then entered the Freeport School of nursing, obtaining her R.N. certification, and received her B.S.N. a few years later while living and working in Colorado. In 1966, in the midst of the Vietnam conflict, Luella enlisted in the US Navy, entering at the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) in the capacity of orthopedic nurse at Naval Hospital Portsmouth in Portsmouth VA, She served in that capacity until her honorable discharge in 1968. Luella cared for numbers of our most seriously injured returning combat casualties, many of whom had lost limbs. During her extensive nursing career, Luella also worked as an orthopedic nurse for several years at St. Mary’s Hospital at Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. She chose to spend the latter part of her career in Oregon, where she had enjoyed living earlier in her career, settling in Salem. In those final years, Luella worked in a variety of nursing roles in both hospital and nursing home settings in Salem.
Luella loved to explore and she traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe during her life. She was a gifted crafter, skilled in various media. She loved animals, especially horses and cats, and leaves behind her beloved feline companion of many years, Tommy. Luella was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority for many years, during which she was involved in many charitable activities in the Salem community.
Luella is survived by her brothers Donald (Bev) Price - Clinton IA; Lloyd Price - New River AZ; nieces and nephews Scott (Deb) Price – Galena IL; Penny (Patrick) Price Cummings – Ingleside IL; Dawn Price – Platteville WI; Janet (Mikal) Price Potter – New River AZ; Jim (Amy) Price - Neenah WI; great-niece Marie Freese – Fitchburg WI; great-nephew Andrew Freese -  Hazel Green WI; and longtime friend and sorority sister Nora Parker - Salem OR. Luella was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Geneva (Hayes) Price, and her older brother, Robert Price.
The family expresses appreciation to Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services in Salem and Willamette National Cemetery in Portland for coordinating arrangements, and to Farmington Square for their compassionate care of Luella.

I extend my condolences to Luella's entire family. She was my classmate and friend, and although she didn't attend class reunions, she always sent a letter telling of her adventures. She helped so many people during her nursing career. Reat in Peace, now, in God's arms!
