Christina Mavis Hefty, age 90, passed away August 24, 2018 while holding hands with her family. She was born January 16, 1928 in Roseburg Oregon to George Stephen Trapalis and Grace Agnes Cochran. She earned her Bachelor’s degree at Oregon State and Masters at Western Oregon. Chris met Charles “Chuck” Hefty at Oregon State at Canterbury Episcopal Club and were married December 17, 1950.
Chris was a resident of Salem for 66 years and taught English and Social Studies at Judson Middle School for 17 years. Her love for teaching and children was recognized by the National Council for Geographic Education with the Outstanding Teaching Award presented to only 24 people in the US in 1988. Spending time with family and friends brought her the greatest joy along with time in reflection: reading, writing and praying.
Chris was very active in the community and volunteer work including St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Church Women United, Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross, United Nations, Bush Barn Gallery, past president AAUW, Salem Library Board member at which time the downtown library was built, Delta Kappa Gamma, and PEO. Her love of people and culture took her around the world including Europe, Asia, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, South America, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and throughout the USA.
Chris left a wonderful legacy in her family; children Mike (Jane), Roger (Sue), Kim (Chris), 8 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren, half bothers Nick and Steve Trapalis, and 5 nieces and 2 nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Chuck, daughter Anne, and sister, Irene. Chris’ family would like to thank the staff at Capital Manor for providing such loving and compassionate care the past year. Chris will be remembered for her kindness, inclusiveness, and welcoming to everyone. She had a joyous life. Sweet Dreams and Kisses.
Funeral services will be 11:00am Friday, August 31, 2018 at St. Timothy Episcopal Church (3295 Ladd Ave NE) followed by a committal service approximately 2:15pm at Belctrest Memorial Park (295 Browning Ave S) in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00pm to 6:30pm Thursday, August 30, 2018. 6:30 evening prayers led by Rev. Brandon Filbert at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service (605 Commercial St. SE) in Salem.
