Donald Patch Parker

August 13, 1936 - September 13, 2018


An Atomic Vet

Donald Patch Parker was born in Oakland, California to Lester and Dorothy Parker.  He was raised in Gold Hill, Oregon and graduated from Crater High School.  He was involved in 4-H and FFA as a young man.  He joined the Navy in 1956, where he served on a repair ship. While serving, he witnessed 18 atomic bomb detonations.  He was honorably discharged in 1960. 

After the service, Patch worked as a truck driver, owned a service station in Chula Vista, California, and worked at a lumber mill in Gilchrist, Oregon.  After that, he went to school at OIT, where he studied to become a civil engineer.  He worked as a civil engineer for the City of Bend, Oregon for many years.  In 1971 he met and married Ava, and they recently celebrated 47 years of marriage.  While in Bend, he served as a Boy Scouts of America Troop Leader, and went on to earn the Woodbadge Certification. 

In 1977 they moved to Christmas Valley, Oregon and bought a restaurant and bar – The Trail.  They operated The Trail for 26 years.  While living in Christmas Valley, Patch served as a Lake County Planning Commissioner for 30 years.  He also served as the Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Department. 

Then in 2012, as Patch’s health was failing, they moved to Jefferson, Oregon.  He is survived by his wife, Ava; sons Cary Dotty and Dennis Joe; granddaughter Karen Craig Branchfield and grandson Joseph Parker; great-grandson Tony Peyree and great-granddughter Eva Branchfield; and sister Linda Parker.  Preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Dorothy Parker and brothers Jack Lucas and Dave Parker.


A Celebration of life will at 11:00am on Monday, Oct 1st at Morning Star Community Church 4775 27th Ave SE.
