Dorothy L. Lute, left this world on September 7, 2018. She was 74 years old. She was able to say goodbye to the Dementia that had isolated her for the past two years.
Born April 6, 1944 to parents Orville and Maebelle Venemen in Salem Oregon. Dorothy was one of five children. Her brothers Rick and Dean Venemen and sisters Linda Coiteux and Sally Teel all grew up in Salem. Dorothy attended North Salem High school before having to stay home to take care of her younger siblings.
It was through her brother Rick that she met Alvin Lute. After dating for about a year, they decided (against her parent’s wishes) to marry. So under the guise of going out for a burger, Dorothy and Al headed for Yreka California where they Married on October 12,1961. They were just a month shy of celebrating their 57th Wedding Anniversary.
Dorothy started working away from the home when her children were still small. She shared stories of working in the local turkey plant, plucking feathers off the birds. She also tried her hand at waitressing and bartending. Dorothy started working at Fairview Training Center where she used her people skills to care for patients. After moving into management, she received awards for her management work at Fairview Hospital. All of those previous jobs prepared her for her last which was owning Duffy’s Hangar between 1992-2000. Her dream was to own a tavern and it was here where she worked until she was forced to retire.
Dorothy was an example of strength and perseverance. In the last 25 years of her life she battled with Cardiomyopathy resulting in a heart transplant. She also survived breast cancer, diabetes, strokes and kidney failure. It was the dementia and her second heart that finally ended her life.
Through all of these circumstances, Dorothy had a zest for life. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles for over 40 years. Indoors she liked crafts, painting, knitting, doing her nails. Outdoors Dorothy was a hunter and enjoyed fishing and camping. She enjoyed channeling her inner Patsy Cline by Karaoke singing whenever possible. But oh how she enjoy going to the casinos to gamble with the slot machines or play scratch-it lottery cards. Dorothy drove where ever and when-ever she could with her last big trip driving through Canada to Alaska.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Alvin A. Lute, Son Gary D. Lute and wife Agena Almero of Salem and Daughter Valerie Turner and husband Hank Turner of Salem; Grandchildren Jaryn Lute, Devon Lute, Erick Turner, Jeremy Turner, Jordan Lute, Courtney (Turner) Mathis, and Travis Turner; and Great-grandchildren Emilee, Andrew, Colton and Maverick Turner and Taytum Lute. She also leaves behind her beloved cat Ginger.
Dorothy is Predeceased by her parents and her sister Linda Coiteux (2016).
