Paul LaVerne Sturzinger

February 25, 1953 - July 14, 2018

Paul LaVerne Sturzinger
February 25, 1953- July 14th 2018

On July 14, 2018, Paul lost his battle with brain cancer. He was born in Denver, CO to Vernadine Mills. He spent the first few years of life in a foster home there. After his mother married she took Paul to Oregon. His stepfather legally adopted him and he was given the name Sturzinger.   Paul attended West Salem Elementary, Walker Jr. High, and McNary. It was at McNary that a PE teacher realized that Paul lived in a troubled home. Coach Russ Morris went to court and gained custody of Paul. Together with his wife, Niki, Coach Morris encouraged Paul to be his best. They gave him a home where he was wanted and loved. He pursued sports, which he excelled at, and coach Morris introduced him to woodworking which later became his passion. He attended college on a football scholarship but when he was forced out due to a knee injury, his college life came to an end. With no support of any kind he set out to make his way in the world. He worked at all kinds of jobs, but his interest in woodworking was always prevalent in his life.   In 1977 he married his wife, Diane. That same year he started his business, Custom Building Improvements, a remodeling business he ran successfully until just a few years ago when his health forced an early retirement. Paul was above all a family man. He longed for a happy family and had that, with the help of his Savior, Jesus Christ.   Paul’s passions were home restoration, wood carving, repairing and restoring antique furniture and boxes, camping, hiking, fishing, eating out, and above all being with his family.  He is survived by his wife Diane, sons, Matt (Jenna), Joe (Carrie), Granddaughters; Grace, Hope, Audrey and Claire, Foster brother and sister Russ Morris (Sarah), Brenda Morris, sister in law Patricia Young (John);  father in law, John Gulan and a biological half sister and brother. Memorial Service Monday, July 30, 11:00 AM at Salem Alliance Church,  555 Gaines St NE, Salem, OR 97301.  Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service
