Sandra Maxine Rhodes

January 25, 1938 - June 26, 2018


Sandra Maxine Peterson Rhodes passed away unexpectedly June 26, 2018 at Salem Health Hospital from a blood clot.  She was the wife of Ray Rhodes, Salem; mother of Janet Rhodes, Salem; Paul Rhodes, Montara CA; grandmother of  Tanner Rhodes, 21, Sydney Rhodes, 19, and Riley Rhodes,15, all of Montara, CA; and sister of Jon Montague Peterson, Sacramento CA.
  
She was born on January 25. 1938 in Tulare, Calif and graduated from Tulare Union High School in 1955.  She attended the University of Pacific and graduated from then-Fresno State College in 1959 with a BA.
 
She married Raymond Thomas Rhodes of Modesto, CA on Aug. 24, 1957 in Fresno, Calif.  The newly-weds lived in Modesto, then Davis, CA where Mr. Rhodes obtained his teaching certificate in Vocational Agricultural Education from the University of California, Davis..  The Rhodes moved to Kingsburg CA where Mr. Rhodes taught at the high school and Sandra began her professional career teaching Kindergarten classes.
 
Thailand became the next home for the Rhodes family as Mr. Rhodes received an assignment to the Bangpra Technical College where he helped retrain Thai agricultural teachers.  Sandra taught English as a Second Language classes to students attending the College. 
 
In 1972 the Rhodes moved to Salem, Oregon where Mr. Rhodes was named Agricultural Program Specialist in the Oregon Department of Education.    Sandra begun teaching ABE-GED classes at Chemeketa Community College in a career that lasted some 20 years.  She enjoyed working with students and faculty, remaining active with the Emeritus Group.   She was an active partner with her husband in the operation of the Rhodes Angus cattle herd.
 
Sandra was exceptionally friendly to everyone she met, from college deans to gardeners.  Her smile, quick laugh and interesting conversation were the basis for many friendships; some of which were of great longevity.  She was interested in reading, her dogs, her children and grandchildren, her trips to Africa, Australia, Europe, Asia, and many cruises.

A public Celebration of Life will be held in Salem on July 14, 2018 from 1 - 3 pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 770 Chemeketa ST. NE, Salem, OR.  Assisting is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
