Ruth La Verne Edmonds

August 10, 1920 - May 15, 2018

Ruth joined the celebration in heaven May 15, 2018, three months shy of her 98th birthday and is now in the presence of her beloved Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Ruth was born in Portland, Oregon on August 10, 1920, to George and Carrol (Richards) Simpson.
Ruth accepted Christ as her Savior at age 13 and her faith and love for God was first and foremost throughout her life.
After an illness, Ruth chose to return to high school completing two years in one year’s time and graduated in 1940.  She then went to secretarial school.
Ruth met Byron at Wings of Healing Church in Portland, Oregon during their teen years and married in December 1940.  After moving to Salem, Oregon they were faithful members of Open Bible Church in Keizer, Oregon for over 25 years.  Together they raised five children and were married almost 48 years until Byron passed away in 1988.
Ruth desired to be a nurse but was not able to pursue that dream and raise five children.  Instead, she became a medical transcriptionist for Drs. Upjohn, Ross, and Geiser for 3 ½ years and then for Salem Memorial Hospital for just over seventeen years until she retired.
Months after Byron’s death, Ruth went to Shiloh Training Institute in Hamilton, Montana and received a Leadership Certificate.  As a dedicated Christian, she quietly and faithfully served God and was active in church and Bible studies and faithfully gave to Christian ministries.  She had a passion to know God, never missed church, always went to special meetings, and ALWAYS took notes of sermons.
Ruth demonstrated unwavering faith in God throughout many difficult challenges in life.  She was a strong woman of God and was sensitive to other’s physical pain and suffering.  She would visit, phone, and/or send a card.  She never forgot birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions.  Often it included, “I’ve been praying for you.”
She loved to read but focused on Biblical and historical topics.  She also enjoyed cats, flowers, Oregon beaches, and cutting out recipes and newspaper articles that were meaningful to her.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Byron Doyle Edmonds, daughter Donna Louise Edmonds, brother Richard Henry Simpson, identical twin-sister Esther Lavelle Johansen, and son-in-law Robert David Gilliam.
She is survived by daughters Carolyn Ruth Edmonds of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Claudia Ann Gilliam of McMinnville, Oregon, Maryann Maxine Edmonds of McMinnville, Oregon, Maryann Maxine Edmonds of McMinnville, Oregon, son Ronald Byron Edmonds of Dallas, Oregon, daughter-in-law Susan Edmonds who faithfully took care of Ruth for the last few years, son-in-law V.J. Adams; grandchildren: Andrae Edmonds of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Tasha Fisher of Salem, Oregon, Karli Del Biondo of Milwaukie, Oregon, Tracy Sammons of Camas, Washington, Kristi Reimer of McMinnville, Oregon, Shelly Gilliam of McMinnville, Oregon, Robby Gilliam of Sisters, Oregon; great-grandchildren:  Ryan Edmonds of Austin, Texas, Haylie Edmonds of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Kaden Edmonds of Salem, Oregon, Keenan and Tessa Fisher of Salem, Oregon, Samuel and Juniper Kuhn, and Amelia Chapman of Milwaukie, Oregon, Taylor Berry of Camas, Washington, Kaenan Gilliam of McMinnville, Oregon, Ashton Dreyer of McMinnville, Oregon, and Allison, Jordan, Katelyn, and Peyton Gilliam of Sisters, Oregon.

Ruth’s determination to serve God through all obstacles will live on in her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and the many lives she touched.

Visitation for Ruth will be from 10:00am to 5:00pm on Thursday, June 14th.  Services will be held 10:00am on Friday, June 15, 2018, at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem, Oregon.  A Graveside will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens in West Salem.

In lieu of flowers, donations to World-Map will be greatly appreciated.

God bless Ruth, So many times she would answer her phone. We had nice chats. Then one day no answer to a call.  I thought Ruth must have passed away.   So happy for a life greatly lived.

I used to work with Ruth at Dr Upjohn's office many years ago. She was very kind and a very hard worker. She is in great company now and at peace.

Aunt Ruth was always a pillar of faith in her savior Jesus. I remember her laugh, her warmth when I showed up one day skipping H S class. It was always a joy to visit the Edmonds home growing up. She will be missed.

I worked with Ruth but this was many years ago. The children were still home. I was very pleased because of working with a family member. I just can't remember if it was McLaren or dept of revenue. I was also very young. Some of my early work years. I know we enjoyed each others company. I was Marie Beard at the timem4m
