Doris K. Tillotson

September 15, 1928 - March 22, 2018

Doris Elaine Tillotson, age 89, a long time resident of Mount Vernon, Washington, passed away on Thursday, March 22, 2018 of age related illnesses, at her son and daughter-in-law’s home in Keizer, Oregon.

Doris was born in Bend, Oregon, on September 15, 1928, to Clarence and Franciel Kimble.  Growing up in what was a small Oregon city at the time, she had fond memories of living in the country on a small acreage.  Horseback riding with her brother Lawrence, helping to tend to the chickens, or just enjoying a custom made play house were lasting impressions in her life.

During the war, her family felt fortunate to move from rural Oregon to Salem where her parents worked for the State of Oregon.  Life in Salem led to many more happy memories.  Graduating from Salem High School in 1946, and continuing her education at Willamette University where she graduated in 1950, majoring in Home Economics.  Willamette was also where she met her future husband of 53 years, Delbert Tillotson.
Doris continued with additional studies after graduation to obtain her teaching certification.  Her first full time teaching engagement came in a small school district, Oakland, Oregon.  But, not before a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Hawaii with her Alpha Chi Omega sorority sisters!  A trip that was not so common in 1951 for a young person made a lasting impression and she spoke of it often.

Doris and Delbert were married on November 25, 1953, at the First United Methodist Church of Salem, Oregon.  Not long after that, Doris and Del moved to Mount Vernon where Del began a long career teaching at Skagit Valley College.  Doris soon followed Del in teaching at SVC when she was offered a newly created, part-time night school teaching position of sewing which ultimately led to a specialized tailoring curriculum that she created.  Doris found great enjoyment in working with a variety of adult students for over 30 years and many expressed an appreciation for her endless patience and kindness.  It was also during these early years in Mount Vernon where their family grew when sons Stephen, and a few years later, Craig were born.

During retirement, Doris continued to swim with her friends at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.  An activity she participated in for over 30 years.  Doris and Del went on many car trips to visit notable West Coast locations including Canada.  And of course, continuing to visit the great outdoors with many an interesting hike or even an occasional backpacking trip.

Doris is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Helen Kimble, of Fort Worth, Texas; sons and daughter-in-laws, Stephen and Katy Tillotson of Salem, and Craig and Silvia Tillotson of Keizer; a sister-in-law, brother-in-law, a niece, two nephews and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Delbert, and her parents.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 1:00PM at the First United Methodist Church, 1607 East Division Street, Mount Vernon, WA 98274.  A reception will follow the service. A graveside service will then conclude at the Mount Vernon Cemetery, 1200 E. First ST, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.
Memorials may be made to the Methodist Church at the address above, or the Willamette Valley Hospice, 1015 3rd Street NW, Salem, OR 97304.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kern Funeral Home of Mount Vernon.  Family and friends may sign an online registry and leave notes at
