Daniel Fast

January 31, 1926 - March 10, 2018

Daniel Fast, age 92, slipped peacefully into heaven on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at The Woods at Willowcreek in Salem, Oregon. His strong faith and conviction in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ provided him with the surety that he was heading home where he would be reunited with beloved wife Maysel.

One of eight siblings, Dan was born in Paxton, Nebraska on January 31, 1926, along with twin sister Anna to Peter K. and Helena (Thiessen) Fast. The family lived on a farm in Nebraska for a number of years before moving to Dallas, Oregon in the late 1930’s. Dan helped support the family through various jobs, including picking various crops in the Willamette Valley. He often fondly reminisced about being the frequent winner of the strawberry picking competitions he had with his cousins. As a young man, he attended Grace Bible Institute in Nebraska and spent summers working at the Cannon Beach Conference Center.

Dan was married to Betty Jo Wise from 1950 to 1983. They lived in the Salem area, where Dan worked in the building trade, eventually starting his own building business. Together they raised two children, Cheryl and Larry.

In 1983, Dan met Maysel Shepard. Love blossomed and they married on December 31, 1983, at the Oak Park Church of God in Salem. They shared a love of gospel music, particularly the Gaither’s, traveling all over Oregon and Washington to attend their concerts. They enjoyed spending time with friends, playing dominoes and traveling the U.S. together in their motorhome.

Throughout Dan’s life his favorite pastime was working with wood. Working in his shop creating beautiful cabinetry and furniture gave him great joy. When he retired, he gave generously of his building talents to a number of Oregon churches, doing remodels, building pulpits and creating display cabinets.

He is survived by sisters Lena Swan and Bertha Strider; daughter Cheryl Wells (Robert), son Larry Fast, and grandson David Wells. Also surviving are step-son Del Shepard (Carolann) and step-daughter Marita Martinez (Dave) and numerous step-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by wife Maysel; brothers Abraham Fast and Pete Fast; and sisters Marie Neufeld, Katherine Adrian and Anna Fast.

The family thanks the incredible caregivers at The Woods and the staff of Hospice Care of the Northwest for the loving attention they provided to Dan during his final weeks.

Visitation will be Friday, March 16, 2018, from 2:00 – 5:00 pm and the funeral service will be held Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 2:00 pm at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service (605 Commercial St SE, Salem, OR 97301) with reception to follow.

Donations in Dan’s memory may be made to the Salem Oak Park Church of God Missions Program
