Douglas John Axen

July 31, 1937 - February 15, 2018

Douglas John Axen, 80, passed away in his home, surrounded by the love of his family on February 15th 2018 in Keizer, Oregon. 

Doug was born July 31,1937 in Central City, Nebraska to Carl Axen and Lois Smith Axen.  He was the third child born preceded by sister Phyllis and brother Stan.

Doug’s family moved to Ontario, Oregon in 1944 and he graduated from Ontario High School in 1955.  He served in the Navy from 1957 to 1962.  Doug earned a Bachelors degree in History and English from College of Idaho in 1963 and a Masters of Arts degree from Oregon State University in 1969. 

He married the love of his life Sandra Axen on March 3,1960 in Rockville, Maryland.  Together they raised two sons, Trent and Terron.  Doug took his first teaching job in Elma, Washington in 1961.  Two years later Doug and Sandra moved to Lebanon, Oregon where Doug began teaching at Lebanon Union High School from where he eventually retired in1996.

Doug and Sandra centered their life around their faith in God and were very involved in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lebanon.  Doug loved the outdoors, working on his farm, singing and following the various exploits of his grandchildren.  Doug also loved traveling.  He and Sandra were fortunate to explore many parts of the world.  Doug had special affinity for the Islands of Hawaii and was fortunate to visit countless times.

After retirement Doug and Sandra moved to Keizer Oregon in order to be closer to his family.  He is survived by his wife Sandra; son Trent (Debbie,) son Terron (Lillian) and grandchildren Brandie, Nathan, Nicole, Casandra and Makenzie. 

A funeral service will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church 1770 Baxter Rd SE Salem Oregon 97306 on Saturday February 24th at 1pm.
