Jeanette Alexander Pierce

February 1, 1929 - February 4, 2018

Jeanette Alexander Pierce celebrated her 89th birthday on Thursday; on Friday she enjoyed lunch with her three children; then early Saturday morning, as she slept, she suffered a massive stroke.  Jeanette passed away Sunday, February 4, 2018.  She was born in St Louis, Missouri, on February 1, 1929, to Albert and Mabel Gilbert Johnston, the fourth of six children.  Growing up during the Depression had its challenges yet those hardships couldn't break the bond of love within the Johnston family or their infectious sense of humor.

The family came to Salem, Oregon, when Jeanette was a young teenager.  She graduated from Salem High School in 1947.    On June 10, 1949, Jeanette and Norman D Alexander married in Salem, Oregon.  Jeanette had an optimistic outlook to life with a strong faith in the Lord.  She was a life-long member of Trinity United Methodist Church and looked forward to singing in their choir and with the Just For Fun Singers.  Jeanette enjoyed traveling and going for car rides; held her own when playing Bridge; and never tired when she was on the dance floor.  She took great pride in her work as a secretary and reveled in having worked with ethical and friendly employers.  Jeanette and Norman loved their three children and experienced great joy being grandparents.   Jeanette and Norman were married for 47 years before he passed away in 1996.  A couple years later she married Robert Pierce.

Left to honor Jeanette and remember her love are her three children, daughter, Carole Wilson, and sons, Doug Eliana Alexander and Kirk Alexander;  grandson, Jed Amy Wilson and two great-grandsons, Aidan Wilson and Isaac Wilson;  sister, Billie Saunders; brother, Jimmy Johnston; and 11 nieces and nephews.  Jeanette was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; brother, Raymond; and two sisters, Marion and Harriet.

Jeanette was a kind and generous woman who would always greeted you with a smile.  She was a bright light that will remain in many hearts.

A Celebration of Jeanette’s life will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at 1:00 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 590 Elma Avenue SE, Salem, Oregon, 97301, with The Reverend Sandra Kimbrow and Jeanette’s nephew Reverend David Lukov officiating.

The Wilson and Alexander families extend their gratitude to the staff at Redwood Height Assisted Living Home for their attentiveness and the loving care they shared with Jeanette.  The Wilsons and Alexanders are also grateful to all the doctors and nurses at the Salem Hospital for the care and expertise they gave; with a special thank you to Rivka, RN, in Intensive Care.  Her compassion and thoughtfulness was felt and appreciated by Jeanette’s grieving family.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jeanette’s name to Trinity United Methodist Church.

My husband and I would like to express our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of your beloved Jeanette. Although we hadn’t had the opportunity to meet Jeanette personally we do understand the pain of losing one so dear. We would like to share with you comfort we have experienced from Gods word found in 2 Corinthians 1:3,4. Our Heavenly Father is truly a wonderful source of comfort, he is always there for the broken hearted and those crushed in spirit ( Psalm 34:18) Please take a few moments, share your memories with those who surround you, for the memories shared are the ones most truly cherished, may they bring you comfort and peace as you begin to heal. Take care of yourselves and each other during this very difficult time.
