Gary Lee Derrick

June 13, 1948 - February 5, 2018

Gary Lee Derrick, 69 of Salem Oregon, died Monday February 5th, 2018 surrounded by his family.

He was born in Ontario, Oregon, on June 13, 1948. He lived his earliest years with his family on his uncle’s ranch in Ironside. He loved living in the country, bucking hay, working the ranch, and enjoying the rugged beauty of Oregon. He attended high school in Ontario Oregon until he enlisted in the US Navy when he was 17 years old. For over 25 years, Gary travelled the world as a sailor.

He retired and returned to Oregon in 1991. Where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spoiling his grandchildren. He loved exploring Oregon, having spent many years camping and playing on his ATVs. More recently, they spent quite a bit of time traveling to National Parks across the country. Last summer, he drove his RV from coast to coast on Rt 20 from Astoria to Massachusetts.

He leaves behind both parents, Melvin and Pearl Derrick, his loving sister Peggy, and his estranged sister Sharon. He was predeceased by his brother George.

He married his wife Ketty Derrick in 1972 and together they raised their two daughters. He will be terribly missed by his daughters Kristi and Debbie, his son’s in love AJ & Keith.

His grandchildren were his greatest joy. For all of their lives, he was their champion and cheerleader. Whether down the street or across the country, they enjoyed their time together, Alicia, Brian, Stephanie Boucher and Jayla Lyn Coulombe. More recently, he has enjoyed his new grandchildren through marriage Kaitlyn and Tyler. His only great-grandson Teddy Kennelly was a delight to him in his final year. He also leaves behind his beloved little dog Zendi.

He also leaves behind countless nieces, nephews, and assorted family who always enjoyed their uncle Gary’s antics and fun. He was always up for a bit of mischief!

He also leaves behind three children from his first wife, Connie, Gary Jr., and Zack.
