William DeLapp

February 12, 1928 - December 18, 2017

William “Bill” DeLapp, age 89, of Newberg, OR passed away peacefully on December 18, 2017 at Friendsview Manor. He was born February 12, 1928 in Salem, OR to the late Lester and Erma DeLapp.

Bill earned his Bachelor's degree in Economics and Sociology from George Fox College, and a Master's degree in transportation and law from Lewis & Clark. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951-1954, as a supply sergeant for a medical battalion in Korea, and an occupational therapist technician at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Colorado.

After he was discharged from the Army, Bill worked for his family’s trucking business as the terminal manager in Portland until 1959. From there, Bill worked for the Federal Bureau of Enforcement in the Department of Transportation, where he worked until his retirement in 1982. During his tenure with the Bureau, he earned certificates in many areas such as Hazardous Materials and Accident Investigation, and was a certified police academy instructor for region 10.

In his retirement, Bill ran a machine and wood shop; was a member of multiple Work and Witness teams and drove charter buses for the Nazarene Church; served on the President’s Council at his alma mater, George Fox; was an active Toastmaster; enjoyed ballroom dancing; spending time with friends and family … and was rarely seen without a latte in hand from his favorite, Cottage Coffee!

Bill is survived by his children, Greg, Cheri (Hal), and David (Ashley); 11 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brother, Jim (Pat); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Stephen; and his sister, Dorothy. He was deeply loved by many, and will be missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

Will always remember Bill's laugh.  Enjoyed our visits at Aspinwall's Fruit Stand where we would see Bill.  Always enjoying our ice cream.  Ray and Donna Graning

I worked at Friendsview and enjoyed Bill coming by the front desk sms visiting. I always wished we could dance, I'm guessing he was pretty good. He shared some trophys he won. Always an interesting and kind person. Rest in peace Bill!
