Marian Maxine Gitschlag

September 16, 1926 - December 8, 2017


Marian Maxine Burns Gitschlag of Sublimity, Oregon, died peacefully December 8th, 2017 due to complications of a stroke. Her husband of more than 60 years Richard Franklin Gitschlag preceded her in death November 1, 2012.

She was born August 16, 1926 in Salem Oregon to the late Frances and Theodore Burns and grew up near West Salem, attending West Salem Grade School and Salem High School.  She attended Oregon State University studying Pharmacy and graduated with honors May 1949. She married Richard F. Gitschlag September 16, 1949, and began a family soon after.

Marian
was preceded by her sister, Viola Noble, and is survived by her Brother Theodore Burns, Jr. of Eugene, Oregon, and five children: Richard G. Gitschlag of Tillamook, Oregon, Robert Gitschlag of Oregon City, Robin Rose of Vancouver Washington, Randal Gitschlag of Salem, Oregon, and Rebecca Ann Mickel of Sherwood Oregon. In addition, Marian has one niece, Cheryl Davis of Coos Bay, Oregon, nine living grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

While raising her five children, Marian worked as a pharmacist for over 30 years until retirement. In retirement, she volunteered as a Senior Peer Counselor for North West Senior and Disability Services,  as well as t
aking care of her ailing mother Frances. Marian loved crafts, crocheting, quilting, scrapbooking, genealogy, and card games. While living in Marian Estates in Sublimity, Oregon she joined the pinochle club and learned to play mahjong. She was independent and active up until her passing. Marian will be remembered as a kind, gentle, and independent woman. 

A private burial will be held in Zena, Oregon.  Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to North West Senior and Disability Services at nwsds@nwsds.org , 503-304-3471
