Harold R. "Bud" Staff
March 28, 1929 - November 21, 2017
Harold R. "Bud" Staff, age 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. He was born in Los Angeles, California to Harold P. and Eva l . (Archey) Staff on March 28, 1928.
Bud spent his childhood and attended schools in Highland Park and Arcadia, California, graduating from what was then called Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte High School in 1947. He served as a Past Master Counselor for the Arcadia Chapter of the Order of DeMolay. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947 to 1950. Bud followed in his father's footsteps and became a Freemason in 1950. He graduated from Pierce College, School of Agriculture in Canoga Park, CA in 1954.
Bud married the love of his life, Mary Ellen Vander Werf of Holland, Michigan on July 9, 1954. They had a garden wedding ceremony at Bud's parent's home in Arcadia California. His career in Banking and with Credit Unions allowed them to live in California, Idaho, Nevada and Oregon. The family moved together to Salem, Oregon in June 1974. After 17 years in the financial industry Bud was ready for a career change. He worked for the Salem-Keizer School District in the Transportation Department as a Preventative Maintenance Mechanic before retiring in 1994.
As a youngster Bud loved to go camping in the California mountains with his parents and brother, and with his own family in Oregon. He also enjoyed gardening and reading historical books. After retiring, Bud and Mary enjoyed several cruises with friends. They volunteered for five years for Meals On Wheels and enjoyed delivering meals in the Sublimity and Stayton areas.
Both Bud and Mary attended Court Street Christian Church in Salem since 1974. They served in several ministries together and Bud was honored to serve as an Elder for many years.
In 2006, Bud and Mary moved to Sublimity Oregon where they have enjoyed the close-knit community of Marian Estates.
Bud is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary, his children and grandchildren Jennifer L. Staff, Anthony Gonzalez, Sara Guzman, Emily Gonzalez, Jessi Bennett, Martin Gonzalez, Isaac Coria, Maria Elena Coria and nine great grandchildren. He is survived also by his sister-in-law Betty Staff and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bud was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey L. Staff, his parents and his brother Elmer L. Staff.
Services to celebrate Bud's life will take place 11:00am Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Court Street Christian Church, 1699 Court St NE, Salem, OR 97301. Bud has asked that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to Court Street Christian Church, (1699 Court Street NE, Salem OR 9731) sponsoring Craig and Allison Fowler. (CMF missionaries to Ethiopia). Assisting is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
