Richard "Dick" James Riley

April 13, 1943 - October 6, 2017

Richard "Dick" James Riley passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side. He was born on April 13, 1943 to Bessie and William Riley in Kansas City, Kansas. After graduating from high school he joined the army, spending most of his time in Germany. Upon returning home he attended junior college, then transferred to Kansas State College (now Pittsburg State University). There he met his future wife Sandy. They were married on July 2, 1966 and were blessed to have fifty-one years together. They moved to Salem, Oregon forty-eight years ago.

Richard received his Masters Degree from Western Oregon University and went to work for Salem Public Schools, retiring in 1999. He loved his job. Richard developed vocational training programs for the mentally challenged students—a "Special Deli" and Recycling program. While teaching he also served in the Oregon National Guard. He retired from the National Guard where he had been on the biathlon team and later worked as biathlon coordinator and in the food service program.

After retirement he revived his love for music playing with several bands and groups around the city.

As a snowbird he spent winters in Yuma, Arizona where he played with the "End of the Road " band, Hawaiian Club, Das Bratwurst Haus (German restaurant)and also taught ukulele classes. He is survived by his wife Sandy, son Kevin (Genalin), daughter Jenelle, grandsons Patrick and Jimmy, brother Robert (Jan) and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by son Russell.

Richard lived life to the fullest. He had a wonderful, recognizable laugh and a great sense of humor.

He loved the outdoors—hiking, kayaking and bicycling. He will be missed.
