Martha (Marti) Alice Vreeland
September 25, 1943 - September 15, 2017
Marti was born in Downers Grove, Illinois, to William R. and Alice B. Lathrop. She attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville School of Nursing. In 1963, she married Jacob (Jake) Vreeland, who preceded her in death last October.
Marti was an accomplished nurse who finished her career in Labor & Delivery at Salem Hospital. She was a long-time active member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America congregations in the many communities in which she lived.
Among Marti’s favorite years were those spent in Vienna, Austria, when she and her family accompanied her husband during his five years with the International Atomic Energy Agency. During that time, Marti volunteered in the library at her children’s school, became fluent in German, and had the opportunity to travel to her ancestral home in Rosendal, Norway, with her mother.
Marti is survived by her and Jake’s three children, Jay (Natalie), Bill and Jennifer. Her family includes six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.A celebration of Marti’s life will be held on Saturday, September 23, at 2:00 at Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (4440 State St, Salem, Oregon). Those attending the funeral are encouraged to provide a skein of yarn to be donated to the church’s prayer shawl knitting group, to which Marti was particularly devoted. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to LuMind Down Syndrome Research Foundation.
