Gerald Wayne Anderson
March 31, 1938 - August 10, 2017
Gerald “Jerry” Anderson was born in Aurora, Illinois to Ivar G. and M. Valene Anderson on March 31, 1938. With his family he moved to Portland, Oregon around 1941 at the age of 3 years old. He grew up in North Portland with siblings Ivan, Max and Austrid. Jerry graduated from Jefferson High in 1956 where he excelled in basketball as varsity team Captain. His senior year he competed for the state title championship. He accepted a basketball scholarship and attended University of Oregon majoring in history.
Jerry eventually moved to the Salem area in 1963 following a career in insurance sales. In 1970 he started Anderson Insurance Agency. Interests in other areas allowed him to extend his business into graphics design and photography. As an avid sports fan he actively participated in the West Salem Little League as team coach/manager, as well as providing team photography services.
Jerry was married to Glenda Gettis in 1966. Together they raised 3 sons in the West Salem area. He frequently and openly described raising his sons as the greatest experience of his life.
He enjoyed several leisure activities including watching movies/sports, playing cards and computer programming.
On August 10, 2017 Jerry succumbed to sudden cardiac arrest. He is survived by his 3 children (Garett, Barron and Richard), brother Max and 8 grandchildren (Kayla Ebert, Stevie Johnson, Rene Ramos, Cameron Anderson, Robert Ramos, Marissa Anderson, Katie Anderson and Ryan Anderson).
Services will be held August 26, 2017 2:00 PM at Virgil T Golden Funeral Services 605 Commercial St. SE, Salem, Oregon 97301.
