Robert Roy Carlson

January 30, 1941 - June 15, 2017

Robert Roy Carlson, age 76, of Salem, passed away on June 15, 2017, surrounded by his wife and family. He died from complications of congestive heart failure.

Bob, aka Big Bob, was born January 30, 1941 in Eau Claire Wisconsin. He was the oldest of three sons born to Stanley and Harriet Carlson.  The family moved to Winston, Oregon in the late 1940’s. Bob spent his youth in Winston, and graduated from Douglas High School.  He was the Senior Class President and lettered in three sports; he was a four-year letterman in track and field. He went on to the University of Oregon, where he earned his bachelor degree in mathematics.

On September 9, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Harland.  They were blessed with four daughters, 14 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

After college, Bob started his professional career with State Accident Insurance Fund (SAIF). In 1999, he ended a strong career in Worker’s Compensation, as the Vice President of Underwriting for Liberty Northwest Insurance.
Bob and Barb’s early retirement was spent Snow birding, from their home base of Sun City, AZ. He especially loved life on the road in his many RVs. Camping, fishing, Big Bob hamburgers, and camp side pancakes were what he lived for….and Oregon Duck football.  In 2009, Bob and Barb moved back to Oregon to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Bob is best remembered for his happy disposition, joyful whistling, a quick intelligence, his signature peace sign, love of the Oregon Ducks, and for surrounding himself with family and friends.  He is survived by his wife, Barbara Carlson; four daughters – Debbie Kishpaugh, Sherry Summerville, Shelly Carlson, and Kristie Nollman; his brother Mel Carlson; and all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family would be honored if, in lieu of flowers, donations are made to OHSU or Doernbecher Children's Hospital  in honor of Bob’s daughter, Sherry Summerville and granddaughters Piper Kishpaugh and Giorgianna Carlisle; all cancer survivors. Checks may be mailed to Doernbecher Foundation, 1121 SW Salmon St., Portland, OR 97205 with a notation of the person being honored.  This works for the adult or child honoree.  Phone number is 503-294-7101 if further clarification is needed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Silver Falls Conference Center, July 9th at 4:00 PM, Dinner Reception at 5:00 PM. , 20022 Silver Falls Hwy SE, Sublimity, OR 97385, Phone: (866) 575-8875. Duck attire is encouraged.
