Ralph Alden Hunt

February 1, 1922 - February 7, 2017

Ralph, 95, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2017, surrounded by his family.

Ralph was a loving, generous man with strong family ties and a warm sense of humor.

He was born in Browns Valley, Minnesota, to Earl & Laura (Felling) Hunt. He had fond memories of being raised in a small rural community. When he was still in high school, the family moved to Oregon and settled in the Willamette Valley. After high school, he joined the Air Force and served as an aerial engineer during World War II.

After the war, he attended Oregon State University and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. It was there that he met and married his wife of 64 years, Paula Yvonne (Kurtz). They moved to San Mateo, California, where they started their family of six children. He worked at several pharmacies before buying his own in the late 1960's. He ran his own business until they moved back to Oregon and settled in the Salem area in 1993. He always enjoyed his career and continued to work part-time into his late 70's.

He was an active member of the Lutheran Church his entire life. He enjoyed the outdoors and greeted every day with enthusiasm and a sense of adventure. Throughout his life, his activities included ice skating, skiing, sledding, hunting, fishing, baseball, golf, camping, gardening and frequent road trips. He was an avid reader, especially enjoying science and history.

Ralph is survived by his children, Rebecca (Robert), Deborah, Barbara (Marshall), Jennifer and Steven, five grandsons, three great-grandsons and his brother, Vernon. He was preceded in death by his wife Paula, son Jeffrey, grandson Steven, son-in-law Gordon and his brothers, Maurice, Robert & John.

A funeral service will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1770 Baxter Road in Salem on Saturday, February 25th at 1:30. A military ceremony will be held the following Monday at 10:30 at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Family requests donations be made to the Willamette Valley Hospice - Tokarski Home http://www.wvh.org/living-with-a-serious-illness/tokarski-home/  (1020 Elm St, Salem OR 97304).  Assisting is Virgil T. I was fortunate enough to have worked for Ralph in his Pharmacy in San Mateo in the late 60's.  He was a wonderful and compassionate man and seemed to look for ways to help people.  He was an outstanding example of a kind, honest and supportive man.  My heart goes out to each of you struggling with his loss.  I know you feel blessed to have had him in your lives.  I feel blessed to have known him and honored to have worked for him.

Ralph, thank you for always bringing your best self to all of our family gatherings. I didn't get to know you so well as an adult, but I always appreciated your warm smile and friendly demeanor. I will miss you for that. Thank you for your positivity and enthusiasm, and also for bringing wonderful people into the world - you live on in them.

My thoughts and prayers go out to your entire family.  I only Ralph for a few years but he was one in a million - so kind, so happy, so loving!  A gentle man who was strong.  what a gift he was for all whom he loved and was associated with.
