William L. "Bill" Marshall

July 29, 1928 - January 19, 2017

William “Bill” Marshall passed away peacefully at home in the care of family after a long battle with cancer.  Bill was born in The Dalles to William and Mildred (Taylor) Marshall, the oldest of three boys.  He spent his childhood in Arlington working in his father’s grocery store and on nearby ranches as well as participating in numerous school sports and activities.

Bill enlisted in the Army at the end of WWII and served in Seoul as a part of the US occupation prior to the Korean war.  He returned to the states and with the help of the GI Education bill attended Willamette University and the University of Oregon earning a degree in Business.
While working for  John Deere in The Dalles, Bill met his lifelong love, Jean Whittemore  and they were wed in 1958.  Bill and Jean moved to Salem in 1960 where Bill began working for Masters Service Center as the Credit Manager, a job he held for 20 years until the business closed.  He then went to work for SAIF, retiring in 1992.

Bill had a great love of the outdoors and enjoyed camping and later RVing with family and friends.  His favorite trips were to the Lostine River, deep in the Wallowa Mountains with his family and his annual trips to San Diego and Palm Springs with a group of lifelong friends.   Upon retirement Bill and Jean travelled extensively, especially enjoying their visits to family in Scotland and the bi-annual family vacations with all of their children and grandchildren.  Bill was a voracious reader, a major history buff, especially WWII, and a great debater.  He enjoyed travelling, golfing and spending time with family and friends.  He also was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Bill is survived by his wife Jean of 58 years, and his children, Cathy Nelson (Dani) of Salem, John (Jody) of Portland and Susan Fitzpatrick (Brian) of Helena, MT and his five grandchildren, Andrew and Kaleigh Nelson, Sarah and Megan Fitzpatrick and Caitlin Marshall and brother Don Marshall.  He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mildred and his brother Jim.

The family would like to thank Willamette Valley Hospice for their care of Bill over the last year.  The kindness and support of every staff member and volunteer was a great comfort.

A celebration of life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Saturday January 28th at 1:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Church Building Fund or Willamette Valley Hospice

To the Marshall family. I a man so sorry to hear about the death of William. It is never easy to deal with the death of a loved one. May the fond memories of times you shared with William bring you comfort and peace. May God ease your pain as you contemplate His promise of life in a new world where death will be no more. (Revelation 21:3 & 4)
