Martha Elizabeth Kehl Bremer
April 12, 1924 - December 15, 2016
Martha Elizabeth Kehl Bremer, age 92, died peacefully on December 15, 2016 in her home in Salem.
Martha was born in Van Nuys, California, to Swiss parents, and has dual citizenship with Switzerland and the U.S. She lived in Southern California through World War II and made her home in Northern California until 1982 when she moved to the Salem area.
After High School, Martha's education prepared her to become an Executive Secretary/Legal Secretary; and she pursued that career for much of her life. She loved being a stay-at-home mom and housewife during her daughters' childhood years, and was also a Girl-Scout Leader, P.T.A. President, and was an active volunteer with Guide Dogs For The Blind. In the 1970's and 1980's, she added home remodeling to her accomplishments, using her talents to buy, remodel, and then re-sell many "fixer-upper”, houses in the San Francisco Bay area and in Salem. In her younger years, she became an avid outdoors-woman, and developed a passion for hiking, rock-climbing, and skiing. She continued to pursue many interests, including oil painting, sewing, reading, knitting, gardening, and extensive traveling in the United States and Europe. She traveled often to Switzerland to visit relatives and friends there, which allowed her to re-connect with her "Second Homeland" and her parents' heritage.
For several years after her retirement in 1989, she was an active member of the Bush Barn Art Gallery, and later became an active volunteer at the Salem Senior Center and with Union Gospel Mission. As her mobility was reduced, she turned again to her knitting needles, creating over 150 beautiful sweaters for children in need through World Vision’s knit for kids program. She was a member of Trinity Covenant Church in Salem.
She is survived by her children: Her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Marty Wilson, and Nancy's sons Tony and Jeff; her daughter and son-in-law Marilyn and Terry Lorance, Marilyn's children David and Christine, and Terry's children Jodi and Tara; Tony’s wife Kate, Jeff’s wife Brenda, Christine's husband Al, Jodi's husband Josh, and Tara's husband John; and twelve great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her dear sister Caroline.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Union Gospel Mission, P.O. Box 431, Salem, Oregon 97308.
Private interment was held at City View Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Trinity Covenant Church. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services of Salem
