Patricia Ann Vargas

July 30, 1938 - December 14, 2016

Patricia Ann Vargas passed away peacefully in her Salem home on Wednesday December 14, 2016 in the presence of her husband and daughter. Patricia was born in Wayne, Michigan to John and Gladys Hansen Murdick. She was their only child.
Patricia graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in 1956. Later, she graduated from Portland State University majoring in Urban Studies. She met her husband David Vargas at the University of Michigan. They were married in Detroit Michigan in 1958. They had four children: Michael; Carl who married Jill; Daniel who is married to Carol; and Beth who is married to Dean.Carl preceded his mother in death in 1994. Patricia and David have three grandchildren: Stephanie; Sara; and Anna.
Patricia was a great homemaker. Not only did she sew, home-can food, and cook, but she taught her children to have these skills as well. Patricia employed her exceptional organizational and cooking talents to start and manage a school lunch program at St. Paul's  elementary school in Yakima WA.
Having four children of her own, she opened her home to others, including service as a Cub Scout and Blue Bird leader, and being "mom" to a Laotian family new to America, as well as to several other family teenage friends.
Family has fond memories of her: playing Monopoly, Canasta, and Scrabble with friends at the family cabin in Sisters Oregon; having dinners with her granddaughters; and hosting family holiday celebrations.
The family extends many thanks to the staff at New Horizons especially Alexandra, Ann, Jessica, Josie, Linsey, and Tania for the loving care provided to Patricia and David, and also to Hospice of the Northwest, particularly Lisa, Jennifer, Brandi and David for the support and care of Patricia during her final months.
Donations may be made in memory of Patricia Vargas to Blanchet Catholic School or The Salvation Army.
