Dan was a varsity athlete at Willamina High School, College of Idaho and Linfield College. He
worked with his father, Bill, at Zimbrick Logging. Following graduation from Linfield, he married
Susan Carol Lidstrom and taught at Willamina High School and coached the Varsity Basketball
team. After moving to Salem, he worked for Oregon Metallurgical Corp OREMET in Albany,
OR, with his close friend Dan Kihlstadius for 10 years. Then he had the adventure of a lifetime,
working for Caddie Masters Inc., along with his good friend Tom Van Dorn, caddying, training
caddies and running the Caddie program at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course. During this time, he
traveled to and worked at Augusta National Golf Course, caddying for members and special
guests, including both former Presidents George W Bush and George H Bush and Rush
Limbaugh.

Dan enjoyed watching and being involved with his kids’ sports throughout high school and
college. He spent the last decade of his career at Faye Wright Elementary School in the
Emotional Growth Classroom. ‘Mr. Dan’ had a passion for teaching children and enjoyed
working in the Salem Keizer School District with people who became his best friends.

Dan’s greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren and he spent as much time with them as
possible. Although he left us sooner than we expected, the Lord God knew the exact number of
his days. He leaves behind a family that loves him dearly and to whom he gave love and true
grit. We will miss the hilarious antics and commentary that are the legendary Dan Barnes.

The memorial service, followed by a reception and sharing of memories will be held December
10th, 2016 at 11am at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 510 Idylwood Drive SE, Salem, OR 97302.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Boys and Girls Club of
Salem Marion & Polk Counties, Athletic Programs or Little Guy Football of Willamina and
Sheridan, in care of First Federal, Sheridan, Oregon branch.

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Dan was such a gift to the Wright Elementary School community. Although my children never had him as their teacher, he knew each of their names and knew their interests. Just a couple of weeks ago he was talking to my kids about football-- one of their favorite things. He was always there with a smile and a "hello".

There will be such a void at Wright. He has touched so many lives in this community.
