Sally Jo Nims
June 4, 1949 - November 16, 2016
Sally Jo Nims was born June 4, 1949 to Cecil and Mona Nims, in Tillamook, Oregon. She died on Nov. 16, 2016 at Salem Hospital after a lengthy, hard fought battle with renal failure.
She is survived by her sister, Jan Nims, of Prineville, Oregon, a nephew, Scott Miller of Vancouver, Washington, and a niece, Becca Miller, of Salem, Oregon. She is also survived by a very special cousin, David McFarland and his wife Jerie Ann who looked after Sally during the time she lived with and cared for his mother, Margaret McFarland until her death in 2015. David and Jerie Ann continued to be an important part of her life. Her parents and a sister, Joanna Nims, predeceased her.
Sally attended Oregon College of Education graduating with a Bachelors’ of Science in Education. Shortly thereafter she joined the Peace Corp and was stationed in Florida. While there, she taught under privileged children. After serving her Country, Sally traveled to Japan participating in a teaching exchange program.
Although Sally did not have children of her own, she enjoyed a life surrounded by children, teaching and mentoring each child to succeed as they moved forward with their educational pursuits. Sally was an avid (sometimes rabid) Portland Winter Hawks fan and often went on road trips to Canada taking her niece and nephew. She also enjoyed trips to the Oregon Coast with her niece Becca and dog Zoee.
She belonged to the Salem Fruitland Evangelical Church. Sally deeply appreciated guidance and support from Pastor Ken Baker and friends Marlene and Dusty Rhoades.
There will be no Memorial Service per her request. In Sally’s memory, donations can be made to Willamette Valley Humane Society, by clicking http://whs4pets.org/
