Shirley Arlene Rutherford Phipps

October 6, 1927 - August 11, 2016

Born October 6, 1927 in Whitehall, WI, she was the first of four children to Gordon and Dorothea Andrus, and was called home on August 11, 2016 in the arms of her daughter, grandson, and Kimberly, a very special niece. Her early years were spent at Jacobsen Mill in Coral City, WI, which her grandfather owned. At age six, her family relocated to Oregon, and she resided in Salem for most of her life. She was an usherette at Grand Theatre and Capitol Theatre in Salem as a teenager.

She began a family at the age of 20 and went on to have five children, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She aspired only one thing in life… a family, for which she was best known for. Her love for family was most important in her life, and she leaves behind those who love her most: Kim, Dirk, Lola, Renee, Rory, Sandi, Sheryl, Robert, Derril, Megan, Samantha, Devon, Brandon, Brittany, Adam, Molly, Collin, Claire, Christian, Nicole, Caryn, Kylie, Lexi, Audrey, Ian, and her sisters Joy and Dolores, along with many nieces and nephews who adored her. She is reunited with her mother, father, brothers Roger, Jim, and Jerry, and great-grandson Jaren in Heaven.

She is remembered for her love of family and friends, her beautiful smile that lit up any room she entered, and her strength. She was a single mom raising children on her own, with no help, and helped her children raise their own. She will forever be missed and loved.

A Celebration of Shirley’s Life will be held October 16, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Temple, 4090 Commercial St. SE Salem.

Shirley’s favorite Scripture is 1st Corinthians 13:13: “And now these three remain: Faith, Hope, and Love. But the greatest of these is love”.

Shirley you helped me become the person I am. Thank you for taking me in as one of the kids. I love you and you will always be in my heart.

I miss you so much mom.  Life is hard without you.  It just doesn't have the same importance as it once did.  I know you are watching over me and walk with me everyday.  I am thankful for your presence in my life.  I think of you everyday and am waiting for you to visit me in my dreams.  Fly free mom!  You are one of God's greatest angels.  <3

It's been a year mom. I miss you and look forward to the day I get to be with you again. I'm so lucky that I was chosen to be your child. I couldn't have asked for a better mom. I love you mom!
