Maysel Uella Fast
November 20, 1925 - August 2, 2016
Maysel Uella Fast, 90, died on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at the Four Seasons Residential Care Home in Salem, Oregon. Her strong will to live, faith in God, and the love and prayers of family and friends carried her through her long struggle with Alzheimer’s.
The youngest of four siblings, Maysel was born on November 20, 1925, in Scio, Oregon to William and Virgie Weinberg. As a young child, her family moved to Tillamook where she experienced life on a dairy farm. The family later moved to Yamhill and eventually to Salem where Maysel graduated from Salem High School.
Maysel was married to Joe Shepard from 1945 to 1981. They farmed in West Salem, raising chickens and growing cherries, prunes and grain. Together they raised their three children, Darla, Del and Marita.
In 1983, Maysel met Dan Fast and love blossomed. They married on December 31, 1983, at the Oak Park Church of God in Salem. They shared a love of gospel music, particularly the Gaither’s, traveling all over Oregon and Washington to attend their concerts. They enjoyed spending time with friends, playing dominoes and traveling the U.S. together in their motorhome. Dan will always remember her as a very sweet wife.
Known for her easy conversations with every one she met, Maysel never knew a stranger. She possessed a wonderful smile and loved to laugh. An incredible cook, Maysel’s holiday dinners were not to be missed. She spent many years collecting salt and pepper shakers with over 50 sets in her collection. Church always played an important part in her life.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 33 years, Dan; son Del Shepard (Carolann), daughter Marita Martinez (Dave), step-son Larry Fast, step-daughter Cheryl Wells (Robert); sister Carol Abraham (Merle); and numerous grandchildren. She is predeceased by daughter Darla Shepard, brother Fred Weinberg and half-sister Iva Zeller.
Visitation will be Friday, August 5, 2016, from 2:00 – 6:00 pm and the funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 2:00 pm at Virgil T. Golden (605 Commercial St SE, Salem, OR 97301) with reception to follow.
Donations in her memory can be made to Oak Park Church of God in Salem or Hoodview Church of God in Woodburn.
