Dailey "Dale" Cooper Ray
October 20, 1940 - July 21, 2016
Dailey “Dale” Cooper Ray, 75, of Salem Oregon, went to be with Lord July 21, 2016.
Dale was born in Portland, Oregon on October 20th, 1940 to Dr. George Lewis Ray and Harriet Blackburn Ray who preceded him in death.
Dale joined the army in November 1957. He served his time in Hawaii and Japan. Dale was a drill sergeant from 1976 – 1979 and an Army recruiter from 1989 – 1998, also serving in the Army National Guard and Reserves. Dale retired from the Army ISG, E8, USA in 2000 after thirty three years of service, receiving many awards, decorations and metals. After retiring from the Army, Dale had several jobs that he enjoyed while working for the State of Oregon. His position working with troubled youth, he found the most fulfilling.
Dale worked in a donut shop in Keizer, Oregon in 1961, which was next to a café that he would frequently visit. That is where he met Virginia “Ginger” Steinbrook. Dale and Ginger were married in Woodburn, Oregon January 9, 1962. A union that lasted 54 years and four daughters. During their first years of marriage Dale and Ginger moved to California, Arizona and southern Oregon, returning to Salem permanently in 1984.
Dale received his Associate’s Degree in Arts from Columbia College and a Bachelor Degree of Science, Business Administration from California State University. He also completed a General Bible Course from Liberty University.
Those that knew him well understood that Dale had a knack for accomplishing hobbies and projects in his own way. Somewhere in the middle of middle age, Dale would challenge himself yet again with a difficult form of woodworking. He built three beautiful wooden drift boats and loved to spend time fishing with his friends and family.
Dale’s family was his pride and joy, he loved all family gatherings and will be greatly missed. He was able to travel on family vacations which were annual events that everyone looked forward to. Many memories were made and will be cherished always. He enjoyed his home office and would spend time reading and studying. He was a collector of knowledge, but focused on Biblical and Historical topics.
Dale recognized that he was searching for a relationship with the Lord. He was unsure how or where to get the answers he was desperately seeking. In keeping with his personality, he read many books, poured over the Bible and even took Bible courses to find answers. It was at a church retreat that he opened his heart to Salvation and was saved and baptized. After a tumultuous childhood, Dale was a beacon of forgiveness and an inspiration for all who knew his story. Dale became a charter member of Willamette Valley Baptist Church in Aumsville, Oregon.
Dale is survived by his wife Virginia Ginger, sister Carol Ann White and her husband Larry; as well as daughters, Alicia Corum and her husband Kerry, Melissa Brown and her husband Donald, Jamie Schafer and her husband Michael, Jennifer Krieger and her husband Jeremy; his grandchildren Shea Corum, Breanna Biewend, Evan Hallam, Brandon Brown, Izach Brown, Alyssa Green, Bradley Schafer, Jonah Krieger, Jaxon Krieger and Jace Krieger; and five great grandchildren; a niece and nephew and well as several cousins.
