Vernon Leo Tabery
September 1, 1939 - April 29, 2016
Vernon L. Tabery went home to the Lord on April 29, 2016. He died peacefully at home in his sleep. Vernon Tabery was born on September 1, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois to Nicholas and Lucille Tabery. He was the only boy and had an older sister and a younger one.
Vernon joined the Army after high school and he was trained at Fort Ord. Vernon then was stationed in France for a bit. Upon his discharge from the Army, he went back to Los Angeles and started dating Elizabeth Edwards. They were married on April 20, 1963 and just celebrated 53 years together. Vernon took a job in Salem, so the family moved here. He was with ODOT from 1972 until his retirement in 1994. After retirement he owned and operated his own business Tabery & Associates. He worked with his fellow engineer Ken Senn. Vernon also had worked with different community clubs. In 1987 he joined The Salem Optimist Club and was instrumental in getting their Foundation established, as well as being principally responsible for our involvement in the Kids Relays. Vernon also cooked the Community Thanksgiving dinner at St. Joseph Church for many years.
Vernon is survived by his wife Elizabeth Tabery; two daughters Kristen Tabery and Susanne Hulse; son Michael Tabery; two sisters Barbara Reynard of Reseda, California and Carol Fielding of Chino Valley, Arizona. He also has eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.
