Ervin Philip Leithold
January 20, 1925 - January 17, 2015
Ervin Philip Leithold, 89, of Salem, entered the presence of the Lord on Saturday, January 17, 2015, just three days before his 90th birthday. Ervin was born on January 20, 1925 in Elgin, ND to Philip Leithold and Christina Pfitzer Leithold. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1942.
Ervin enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1943 and was honorably discharged in May 1946. After leaving the military, he moved to Aberdeen, WA to be near his mom and brothers who had moved there. He was hired by Rayonier Pulp and Paper in 1946 where he worked for 28 years. After the mill became Grays Harbor Paper, he continued working there until his retirement in January 1987.
In 1948, Ervin met Phyllis Brecht at Calvary Pentecostal Church in Aberdeen, WA, and they were married on March 24, 1951. After 10 and a half years of marriage, their daughter, Becky was born.
After retiring, they moved to McMinnville in 1990 and then to Salem in 1992 to be nearer to Becky. He faithfully volunteered at Western Baptist College now Corban University for 14 years.
They later moved to Madrona Hills Retirement and then they moved to Farmington Square Attended Care Facility in 2010 where he resided at the time of his death.
Ervin enjoyed reading, gardening, painting, jigsaw puzzles, pitching horseshoes, laughing and telling jokes. Ervin’s faith was his most important possession. Over the years, he faithfully served in local churches, most recently at Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Salem. He loved to study the Bible and to meditate on its truth. His genuine and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ resulted in hearing “Well done, good and faithful servant” as his Lord welcomed him home.
His family, wife, Phyllis and daughter, Becky, will miss him forever and treasure his memory. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Edith Leithold of Montesano, WA, close family friend, Cynthia Geddes of Vancouver, WA, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Inez Leidholdt; and brothers, Emil, Robert, Arthur and Walter.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 9:30 AM on Friday, January 23, 2015 at Willamette National Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Rolling Hills Baptist Church, 6196 Sunnyside Rd. SE in Salem.
