Esther L. McGowan

September 11, 1923 - August 8, 2018

Esther Louise McGowan of Turner, Oregon passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, of heart failure, at her home.  She was 94.
Esther was born September 11, 1923 in St. Louis, Missouri to William and Grace Roth Beckley.  She is survived by her second husband, John Tarr; son, Douglas McGowan; step son, David Tarr; step daughter, Leanne Tarr and step son, Willis Tarr; grandchildren Ruben Garibay, Julie McGowan, Melissa McGowan, Desirae Tarr, Jonhathan Tarr and Tyler Tarr as well as nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd McGowan, Jr.; her son, Donald McGowan and sisters, Eloise Beckley and Robin Hess.
Esther was a career educator, having taught at the elementary school, secondary school and college levels.  Her specialties were English and remedial reading.  She had a bachelor’s degree from Drury College in Springfield, Missouri and a Master’s degree from the University of Missouri at St. Louis.  She moved to Salem, Oregon in 1982, where she taught English at Chemeketa Community College and at the learning center of the Oregon State Correctional Institution.
Esther loved all animals.  The joy of her life was living on acreage in Turner, where she and John had horses, goats, chickens, dogs and cats.  She was an avid spin and fly fisher, and enjoyed camping and outdoor activities.  She also enjoyed reading and the company of her book club.
A memorial for Esther will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the family home in Turner.
