Doris J Chrestenson

1927 - June 1, 2021

Doris J ChrestensonDoris J ChrestensonDoris J. Chrestenson, 94, passed away peacefully at home in Sublimity, Oregon on June 1, 2021.

The third of five children of the late Joy and Gladys Carrell, Doris grew up in Grandview, Washington. As a girl, she was the organizer of many games and activities for her siblings and friends. “Tomboy” was one of the terms often used to describe her. In contrast, she also started, at an early age, her life-long hobbies of sewing and knitting. After graduating from high school, Doris studied for several semesters at WSC now WSU. It was in Pullman where she started dating Hubert Chrestenson whom she had known for many years as a classmate back in Grandview. They were married in 1947 and Doris went to work to support Hubert as he finished up his degree. After the birth of their three children, Doris stayed home and made sure that the family was happy and lovingly cared for.

Quilting and tennis became her passions as her children grew up and left home. After years of sewing clothing for herself and the family, Doris became a skilled quilter. Many family members and friends now sleep at night under her creations. The athlete in Doris found a happy outlet in tennis. She spent many, many happy hours on the court. Even after retiring her racquet in her 80’s she spoke happily of dreaming of playing tennis. Always glad to head to the courts, she played with willing grandchildren and sons-in-law when ever she could.

Doris was a patient and caring teacher - whether it was instructing her grandchildren in the art of doughnut making, teaching a new daughter-in-law the favorite family recipes, or guiding her daughters as they learned to sew, knit and cook.

Home was the center of Doris’ life, but she and Hubert had adventures as well. They spent several years away from Portland in Connecticut, Ghana and London, England. Together they built a rustic cabin on the Oregon Coast (Doris had the grueling job of prepping the used bricks for the chimneys). When Hubert retired, the two of them moved to Forest Grove, Oregon and built a lovely home on 20 acres.

Doris is survived by her three children, Dale (Thuy) Chrestenson, Susan (Lee) Danielson and Mary (Charles) Chrestenson-Becker. Also surviving her are grandchildren Stephen and Andy Becker, Emily and Paul Danielson, Laura and Terri Chrestenson and Vu Huynh, great-grandchildren Sophie, Elena and Duke, siblings James Carrell and Ruth Carrell and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her husband of 73 years, Hubert Chrestenson died January 2, 2021 and her sisters, Joyce Carrell and Mary Larche.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Doris and Hubert’s wonderful team of caregivers. They made it possible for the two of them to stay comfortable and at home during these past difficult months of the pandemic.

Grandma, we all miss you.  Kim and I, and your great-granddaughter Sophie, all sleep under quilts you made for us.  I've been playing tennis with the great-granddaughters and I have your tennis racquets.  The photo is from April 1986, holding your grandson Andy.
