David Nicholas Haley

January 8, 1960 - January 1, 2019

David Haley was born during a snowstorm on Jan. 8, 1960, the fourth of the five children of the Rev. Kent and Janice Haley. He had a healthy, rambunctious early childhood, and entered Fairview Training Center at the age of five, where he had a good experience and learned life skills.

In adulthood he lived in a series of excellent group homes, where he was encouraged to be as independent as he could be. He was a productive employee of Rockwest Training Company, a sheltered workshop, and he was very proud of his work. Like many people with Down Syndrome, he had a sweet and compassionate nature, and took care of his people. He loved parties, Christmas, trips to Hawaii, and his immense collection of model cars.

That he exceeded his life expectancy by several decades is attributable to the loving care he received from his caregivers, especially over the last 25 years with Maxine and Terry Armstrong. His funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Jan. 12, at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 3295 Ladd Ave. NE in Salem. Memorial donations may be sent to Rockwest Training Co., 4646 Ridge Dr. NE Salem, OR 97301.  Assisting is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
