Ann Klindworth Nelson

April 2, 1931 - July 20, 2021

Ann Klindworth Nelson died July 20, 2021, peacefully at her home. She was born April 2, 1931, in Strathfield, Australia, a suburb of Sidney, to Edward and Mildred Klindworth. Her father was in Australia as founding general manager of a factory for Jantzen Swimwear of Portland. She returned to Portland, Oregon at the age of nine after celebrating her birthday aboard the SS Monterey on the journey home. She attended Grant High School in Portland, Willamette University, and Portland State University. At Willamette, she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and maintained a life-long connection to the friends she made there. She married her college boyfriend, Hugh Nelson after graduation from Willamette in 1953. They divorced in 1977. After a break in her career in community social services to raise three boys, Ann received her Master of Social Work from PSU in 1969. She worked many years at the Oregon State Hospital, rising to the position of Supervising Social Worker. In addition, she taught at Portland State University and saw patients at West Salem Clinic and in private practice. Ann had a passion for gardening and enjoyed finding new plants and exploring display gardens. She collected political campaign buttons after her father gave her a button for Willkie for President in 1940. Buttons and other political memorabilia decorated her home. A voracious reader, she would often be found at Salem Public Library seeking out the latest mystery or non-fiction book. She enjoyed traveling and had a fondness for Hawaii where her parents were married before travelling to Australia. She also enjoyed travelling to any country where she could get a properly made cup of tea. She extensively researched the family genealogy and took joy in sharing the connections and story of family with younger generations. She is survived by her sister, Joan Carlson of Muscatine Iowa; three sons, Bruce (Fran), Brian (Margaret), and Greg (Karen) Nelson; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was also beloved “Auntie Ann” to nieces and nephew. She is preceded in death by her brother, Donald Klindworth. Memorial and Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Connell, Washington.

My sincere sympathy to the family of Ann in her passing.  I moved to Salem 50 years ago, as a 27 year old, 4 years out of college with a social work degree.  I was hired by Oregon State Hospital for a social work position and was very fortunate to have Ann as a mentor and supervisor!  I appreciated her kindness, wisdom and patience.  As I had arrived in Oregon with only the possessions I could get in my car, Ann loaned me some furniture, for which I was grateful!  I cherish those memories.
