Advanced Directive - A Good Idea
An advanced directive is a legal document that is specific to the State that you live in and allows for family to make health care decisions for you in the event that you are unable to speak for yourself.
The directive appoints a person who is responsible to make decisions and refer to your instructions in the directive. This can be useful at any age, not just for the elderly. As an example if a your family member was in a car accident and could not speak for themselves, then there would be no control by the family over all the decisions. Decisions can include choosing the care facility, the doctor, types of care, accepting or refusing certain medical treatments. and making arrangements if death occurs.
An advanced directive document is available on the Oregon Health Decisions website, along with more extensive information.
